Frequently asked questions

01What is the 2026 standard deduction?
Per IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32: Single $16,100; MFJ $32,200; MFS $16,100; Head of Household $24,150.
02What is the marginal rate?
It's the rate applied to your last dollar of income — different from the effective rate (total tax / total income).
03Does this include state tax?
Only federal for now. State tax with a per-state picker is a Phase 2 feature.
04Is FBAR required for non-US bank accounts?
Yes. US persons with foreign financial accounts totaling over $10,000 at any point in the year must file FBAR (FinCEN 114). Penalties for missing it are severe — work with a CPA familiar with international tax.
05Do freelance gigs trigger self-employment tax?
Yes. Self-employment tax is 15.3% (Social Security + Medicare) on net earnings, added on top of federal income tax. File Schedule SE if your SE profit is $400 or more in the year.
06Who qualifies for Head of Household status?
You must be unmarried (or living apart from your spouse for the last 6 months), pay more than 50% of home upkeep, and have a qualifying dependent (child, parent, etc.) living with you more than half the year. Standard deduction is $24,150 vs $16,100 for Single.
